Mosaic artist Daryl Lynne Wood of Campbell River, BC, Canada has created art for over 30 years. As an artist, textured materials inspire her.
She became an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1991, when she was a mixed media painter, having attended professional development, courses at Emily Carr School of Art and Design, and while active in community theatre set design and juried art shows.
A trip to Venice in 2002 was the catalyst needed to bring Daryl Lynne back in touch with mosaic art. The Basilica mosaics captured her creative soul and her relationship with fine art was transformed by a trip to the Orsoni glass and ceramic kilns in Venice. Mosaic art is now her medium of choice.
Mosaic is an ancient expression, which dates from at least 500BC Greek pebble mosaics, through to the Byzantine religious mosaics of the Roman world, to a present day renaissance of contemporary mosaics seen in the active associations of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, (SAMA), the British Association of Modern Mosaics, (BAMM), and the International Association of Mosaics, (AIMC), all of which Darryl Lynn is a current member, and with which she has exhibited in juried art shows.
Ocean to alpine is the fortunate lifestyle Daryl Lynne lives, residing on a Vancouver Island beachfront in summer and at Whistler Mountain in winter. Her work reflects these influences from the texture of rocky cliffs to the smooth pebbles and waveforms of the sea. She is also influenced by travel and the diversity of the human expression in culture and art. The diversity is what inspires Daryl Lynne to express herself in mosaic. For example, she can integrate fragments of ceramic from Turkey, beads from Nepal, china from England, smalti from Italy, rocks from B.C. mountainsides and pebbles from B.C. beaches, all in one composition.
Why Mosaic? For Daryl Lynne, it is a question of beauty: "I think beauty is seen in the diversity and union of natural and manmade materials. To express this diversity in the harmonious unity of a mosaic, for me, gives voice to the essence of creativity in art."
The Plaza Galleries is proud to present the fine art of Daryl Lynne Wood.
