Artist Bio: SID DICKENS
Sidney Michael Dickens was born in 1963 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. In 1983, he was accepted to the prestigious Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver. The following year he established his first studio and began to develop the process and practices which have evolved into his various lines of fine art, interior decor and designs.
In 1987, after an inspirational European tour, Dickens regards as pivotal to his artistic development, he relocated to a waterfront studio in the Queen Charlotte Islands. The elemental beauty of this secluded, mythic wilderness expanded Dickens’ vision. He began working with mixed media, incorporating materials such as metal, wire, mud and whale bones salvaged from the Islands’ beaches. He also taught himself to weld, a skill which prompted the creation of a jewelry collection featured in several fashion events in Vancouver.
To further hone his skills, in 1989, Dickens attended the Institute De Allende at the internationally renowned artists’ colony, San Miguel, Mexico. For the next two years, he studied bronze casting. Returning to Vancouver in 1991, Dickens established a new studio in the Gastown District. It was in this studio that he found his preferred media and created the prototypes which have become his signature designs for fine art and decor.
With the creation of Memory Tiles, Sid Dickens found that he was able to create art work that could be moved easily to create a whole new feel for a wall or fit into a totally different environment. From the most modern surroundings to traditional, Sid Dickens Memory Tiles create a conversation piece and transform an ordinary space into something exceptional.
