Artist Bio: Ludmila Curilova
Born in Kishniev, Moldova, Ludmila Curilova was introduced to fine art at the earliest of ages, by her father. A stage set painter for the prestigious Central Ballet Theatre in Russia, Ludmila’s father was widely recognized for his artistic talents. Ludmila often accompanied her father to work, and quietly sat and watched as he and his staff worked magic with their fabrics and paints and created mystical worlds of fantasy. The smell of the paints, the intrigue of the large theatre and the visions that emerged before her very eyes, lead her to fall in love with painting.
Ludmila Curlova’s formal training began at the I.E. Repin School of Fine Arts and continued in Moscow. Always an avid student, Ludmila strove to learn to work with all types of mediums so that she could find her niche in the art world as her father had done before her.
Ludmila’s work is greatly influenced by illusory theatre art and it retains the decorative quality of a fairy tale setting. Both with her paintings on paper and those on canvas, Lumila is able to capture a warm, rich glow of her colours with almost a magical essence. At times her figures exist in a subdued dreamscape amidst fruit and flowers. Skirts flow and her characters have a charm of their own. Metallic paint is often added for refinery onto textiles and surfaces of bowls and pottery.
While Ludmila uses traditional media and tools, acrylic paint, brushes and art knives, she also experiments with small clay sculpture, hand building and hand cutting the pieces and then finishing them with stains and glazes. Her images bring to life that fantasy world that lives within her mind.
